This apartment in the mountainous Ekali was not exactly in need of refurbishing, as it was brand new and the client was the first resident. It was, however, neutrally designed; part of a commercial development so the desire of the owner was to add character to his personal space. Therefore, from the very beginning we focused on creating the conditions that would highlight the owner’s lifestyle and aesthetics. Being a captain of luxury yachts, his love for the sea was for us a base of inspiration.
Our intervention is expressed on two levels, firstly the relationship with the outdoors and secondly the overall atmosphere of the house together with the design of some bespoke furniture. A common quality criterion was to make the apartment a place of relaxation and hospitality with elegant references of life at sea without simplistic illustrations.

As far as the relationship with the outdoors is concerned, we decided to highlight the view of the nearby forest which was completely neglected in the original design. To this end, we placed wooden decking on the verandah which now became something akin to a sailing deck and is joined seamlessly with the wooden floor of the living room. When sitting in the living room, the continuity of materials makes one immediately aware of the beautiful green view just outside. The forest, now, feels like a natural extension of the house.

In the case of the general atmosphere we decided to reduce the general brightness of the spaces by applying different plaster techniques, materials, murals and deep colors on the walls. The walls thus start to obtain a scenic depth and become more suitable as background for the furniture that will be placed in front.

The main wall of the living room becomes an oversized mural showing a stormy sea from the perspective of the captain. The walls of the corridor are covered with coarse cement cast in the color of dark blue (petrol) and the fluorescent tubes in the ceiling create a memorable threshold to the bedroom. Behind the new leather bed, the head of which runs the entire length of the room, the wall is coated with marble plates, split in two in such a way that the marble grain forms a symmetric composition. The en-suite bathroom is fully redesigned as well. It was rather small, and it needed a better layout design and a more suitable choice of materials. Mosaic marble tiles on the floor and walls gave a nice reflective value for such a small space.

The custom made furnishings of the apartment further include a round dining table, low table seating, a bar and a shelving unit. The round table pays homage to naval way finding systems. It bears a scaled drawing of all Greek lighthouses. Their names have been carved on aluminum rods emanating from the center where the actual mapped position of the house is. It comes complete with a functional compass in the middle so that if one rotates the tabletop to the actual north the whole table effectively works as a map and thus one can know exactly to which direction and how far any lighthouse lies. This way during dinner, the captain can illustrate his preposterous sea adventures to his guests even more elaborately.

The coffee table is also inspired by the concept of mapping. Presented as a three dimensional contour map carved out of a block of plywood it includes three islands and the relief of the sea floor. The surface of the sea is a sheet of glass and the tips of the islands are removable secret containers. There are also subterranean drawers deep under the bottom of the sea.

The bookcase and bar were made by laser-cutting patterns on steel sheets. Bending the loose shapes back in order to form the necessary shelving they show a very economic use of material, referencing the cutting edge technology employed in naval design. They are painted glossy black and stand slightly in front of the wall without any visible support. The negatives of the cuts remain standing like abstract nautical symbols.

Η ανακαίνιση του διαμερίσματος αυτού προέκυψε όχι από ανάγκη για αναδιαρρύθμιση αλλά από την επιθυμία του ιδιοκτήτη να προσδώσει χαρακτήρα στον προσωπικό του χώρο μιας και το διαμέρισμα ήταν νεόδμητο αλλά σχεδιασμένο ουδέτερα για κάποιον φανταστικό αγοραστή.

Εξαρχής λοιπόν λειτουργήσαμε με σκοπό να δημιουργήσουμε τις συνθήκες που θα αναδείκνυαν τον τρόπο ζωής και την αισθητική του ιδιοκτήτη. Όντας καπετάνιος, η αγάπη του για τη θάλασσα, ήταν για εμάς ορμητήριο έμπνευσης.

Η παρέμβασή μας λειτούργησε σε δύο επίπεδα, αυτό της γενικότερης ατμόσφαιρας και σχέσης του σπιτιού με τους εξωτερικούς χώρους και σε αυτό του σχεδιασμού επίπλων και μικροκατασκευών. Κοινό κριτήριο ποιότητας ήταν να γίνει το διαμέρισμα ένας χώρος ξεκούρασης και φιλοξενίας με κομψές αναφορές στη ζωή εν πλω του ιδιοκτήτη χωρίς να παρεκτραπεί σε απλοϊκή εικονογράφηση.

Στην περίπτωση της γενικότερης ατμόσφαιρας αποφασίσαμε να ελαττώσουμε την φωτεινότητα των χώρων επενδύοντας τους τοίχους με τεχνοτροπίες σοβά, επενδύσεις υλικών, τοιχογραφίες και βαθιά χρώματα. Οι τοίχοι έτσι αποκτούν σκηνικό βάθος και γίνονται πιο κατάλληλοι ως φόντο για τα έπιπλα που θα μπουν στο προσκήνιο. Επίσης αναδεικνύεται δραματικά η θέα του βαθυπράσινου δάσους που τριγυρίζει το σπίτι ειδικά στη περίπτωση του σαλονιού που ενοποιείται πλέον με τη βεράντα με νέο ξύλινο δάπεδο τύπου καταστρώματος. Ο βασικός τοίχος του σαλονιού μετατρέπεται σε υπερμεγέθη τοιχογραφία που δείχνει μια φουρτουνιασμένη θάλασσα από τη σκοπιά του καπετάνιου. Οι τοίχοι του διαδρόμου καλύπτονται με αδρή τσιμεντοκονία σε απόχρωση σκούρου πετρόλ βυθού και οι σωλήνες φθορισμού σε έντονες θερμές αποχρώσεις στο ταβάνι δημιουργούν το πέρασμα προς το υπνοδωμάτιο. Πίσω από το νέο δερμάτινο κρεβάτι, το κεφαλάρι του οποίου τρέχει σε όλο το μήκος του δωματίου, επενδύεται ο τοίχος με μάρμαρο τοποθετημένο με τέτοιο τρόπο έτσι ώστε τα νερά του να σχηματίζουν συμμετρικό καθρέφτισμα. Το αποκλειστικό μπάνιο του υπνοδωματίου επενδύεται με νέες ψηφίδες. Επίσης τοποθετείται καμπίνα ντους καθώς και πάγκος νιπτήρα από ξύλο teak το οποίο κρύβει συρτάρια και ντουλάπια πίσω από τις περσίδες που λειτουργούν ως λαβές.

Η περαιτέρω επίπλωση του διαμερίσματος συμπληρώνεται από την στρογγυλή τραπεζαρία, το χαμηλό τραπέζι του καθιστικού, το μπαρ και τη βιβλιοθήκη – ραφιέρα.

Η τραπεζαρία έχει χαραγμένους υπό κλίμακα όλους τους φάρους του Αιγαίου έτσι ώστε στρέφοντας το τραπέζι κατά τον αληθινό βορρά που δείχνει η πυξίδα στο κέντρο του να βλέπει κανείς ακριβώς πόσο μακριά και σε ποια ακριβώς κατεύθυνση είναι όλοι αυτοί οι φάροι. Ο καπετάνιος μπορεί έτσι να λέει τις ιστορίες του στους καλεσμένους ακόμα πιο γλαφυρά.

Το χαμηλό τραπέζι του καθιστικού είναι και αυτό εμπνευσμένο από την έννοια της χαρτογράφησης. Παρουσιάζεται σαν ένα αποκομμένο κομμάτι πελάγους μαζί με βυθό, νησιά και επιφάνεια νερού. Είναι κατασκευασμένο με τέτοιο τρόπο έτσι ώστε τα νερά του ξύλου να φαίνονται σαν ισοϋψείς καμπύλες τοπογραφικού χάρτη. Οι κορυφές των βουνών είναι αποσπώμενες ως μικρές αποθηκευτικές κρυψώνες και στα έγκατα της γης υπάρχουν συρτάρια. Η επιφάνεια της θάλασσας είναι από καθαρό τζάμι ασφαλείας.

Οι δύο μεταλλικές κατασκευές, το μπαρ και η βιβλιοθήκη είναι φτιαγμένες έτσι ώστε να παραπέμπουν στην υψηλή τεχνολογία κατασκευής σκαφών. Βαμμένες γυαλιστερό μαύρο στέκονται ελάχιστα μπροστά από τον τοίχο επιπλέοντας χωρίς εμφανή στήριξη. Λεπτά μεταλλικά φύλλα έχουν κοπεί με ακρίβεια και τα κομμάτια τους έχουν καμπυλωθεί για να δημιουργήσουν ράφια και ότι άλλο χρειάζεται. Τα αρνητικά των κοψιμάτων παραμένουν όρθια σαν σύμβολα.
